This is my personal site. I don’t have a plan for what kind of content I will include here.
Who Am I?
I’m a United States Marine, enlisted until 2023. Before enlisting I worked in tech support and practiced various programing, electronics and general computer science projects in my free time.
Programming
Most of my programming experience is in Java, but I have done simple tasks in other languages. I have practice developing object-oriented solutions to a variety of practice problems. Some other languages I’ve worked in:
Python: Object oriented app development, front-end for large apps
C Plus Plus: Basic programs to practice syntax, nothing major yet
Web: Various projects with PHP and SQL, such as a web interface to connect to a command line Pandora client.
Haskell: Functional Programming
Tech Support
I was an assistant technician doing tier one troubleshooting for two years at Dorchester School District 2. Some weeks I would be the only on-site tech support for multiple schools. The type of work varied. Some examples include assisting teachers in using their equipment, repairing and replacing SMART Boards, projectors, desktop and laptop computers and printers, installing and configuring workstations and integrating them into active directory. I also practiced basic trouble-shooting procedures for identifying, researching and escalating issues.
System and Network Administration
I have experience installing, configuring and troubleshooting various linux distributions.
Robotics
I mentored FIRST robotics team 342 from in 2017 and 2018. Teams of high school students are given 6 weeks each January to machine, wire and program their own robot to compete in an arena to achieve objectives such as being the first to climb a wall. See the FRC website for more information. FRC is a great program for high school students to work together on a STEM project. It gives students a practical experience that isn’t taught in a regular classroom that teaches skills far beyond typical the high school curriculum.
Hobbies
I enjoy playing lots of chess in my free time. Feel free to challenge me to a game! My lichess.org username is siliciousreese.
